To date, nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrant youth have been granted DACA status, which provides work authorization and temporary relief from deportation. The program has enabled our graduates to contribute to their communities by significantly increasing opportunities for higher education and jobs. Unfortunately, on Sept. 5, 2017, President Trump directed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to phase out and eventually end DACA over two and half years.

Dear Colleagues and the school community of Galileo Academy of Science and Technology,

I hope you are enjoying your summer break. I am writing to inform you of some administrative shifts within SFUSD that will have an impact on Galileo Academy in the coming school year. Galileo’s principal, Dr. Michael Reimer, will be transitioning to another position in SFUSD. One of Galileo’s assistant principals, Mr. Mark Heringer, has accepted the position of principal at Thurgood Marshall High School.

I want to take this opportunity to personally thank both Dr. Reimer and Mr. Heringer for their commitment and dedication to the Galileo Academy of Science and Technology over the past two years and for their many years of service to SFUSD.

Galileo has a new member of the administrative team who was selected a few months ago. In April, several members of the Galileo community were engaged in the process of selecting Ms. Gina Ferrante as assistant principal. Ms. Ferrante, along with Assistant Principal Janice Chen, are excited to work with Galileo in the coming year. In the next few weeks, we will post and interview for these new open positions of principal and assistant principal with a similar process that involves school and community partners.  Following a recommendation for these positions, the Board of Education must approve appointments. We hope to have a selection and obtain Board of Education approval as soon as possible.

I acknowledge that transitions can be quite challenging, especially this close to the start of a new school year. We will work to roll out a seamless transition for the new principal and assistant principal. Ms. Margaret Chiu, retired SFUSD assistant superintendent and former principal of Galileo, has agreed to help support the school in its day-to-day operations during the transition period. Ms. Davina Goldwasser, Director of Principal Leadership and Support, will continue to work closely with the Galileo administration, staff, and community in the coming year.  We will communicate updates as we move forward in the process.

I look forward to continuing to support the great work of Galileo students, staff and community members.

Bill W. Sanderson
Assistant Superintendent of High Schools
